Status: Completed
Project's start date: June 01, 2008
Project's end date: December 31, 2010
Duration: 30 months
Project Cost & Funding: PKR 37.6 million (Fully funded by National ICT R&D Fund)
The focus of the project has been to emulate and provide a real-life environment in a laboratory so that students can learn the dynamics of real-life software development by actually working on industrial-scale real applications.
Software Engineering education aims at preparing the students for consumption in the software industry. This requires equipping them with the right skill-set and knowledge that can ideally be achieved by involving them with real clients and projects. However, involving students on real projects poses certain risks and it is difficult to convince clients on this and not many agree on assigning the job to students. Hence, availability of such projects in large number on continuous basis is always an issue.
This project emphasized use of open-source projects to teach real-life software development to software engineering students. Opensource applications are well-coordinated and properly engineered industrial strength applications whose source-code is available to the end-users. Mostly development of such applications is conducted by a community of volunteers.
